As part of our continuing efforts in providing our young athletes the best possible experience in minor hockey, RMMHA continues to engage local government, our business community, and arena owner/operators in identifying positive measures that we feel strongly will benefit not only RHHMA athletes, but our communities as well.
In part due to the exhaustive efforts of members of the RMMHA Board, we would like share with the membership the following recent key developments.
Council recently approved an additional $100,000 for subsidized ice for the remainder of 2017, and a $200,000 increase in future years. This funding will be allocated in the same fashion as existing subsidized ice which is based on the various respective organization registration numbers (RMMHA, RM Speed Skating MR Female Hockey, RM Figure Skating, etc).
Council also agreed that the need for a new, additional sheet of ice is a priority. How this additional sheet of ice gets provided is currently being discussed with the current owner/operator. Having this project be moved forward into a counter petition process may become part of the ongoing consideration. The counter petition process relates to allowing the City to borrow funds for the project if the community provides it's support. It is being proposed that this additional sheet of ice would be located adjacent to the existing curling rink at Planet Ice. Thus far, there is very strong support by City Council and the public regarding additional, new ice facilities. There are still some key areas to work through between the City and the arena owner/operator, but RMMHA remains confident that a positive outcome will be achieved in the most expedient manner possible.
RMMHA would like to thank Maple Ridge City Council and City Staff for their positive engagement and discussion on these matters.
RMMHA would also like to thank the various arena operators and staff in working together with us in continuing to discuss all the various topics that ultimately impact the youth of our communities in participating in amateur athletics.
And finally, RMMHA would like to thank our membership for your continued support!
